SAS was commissioned to renovate the cellar space of the Jewish Museum into Russ & Daughters Café and Shop. The project strikes a balance between two historical identities: the Jewish Museum housed within the landmarked Warburg mansion on the Upper East Side, and Russ & Daughters, a landmark culinary institution on the Lower East Side. The previous café interior was stripped away to reveal the building’s original vaulted clay tile ceiling, masonry walls and window openings, creating a generous shell for the new café. The materials, form and color of the café were selected to honor both institutions’ rich histories.
