SAS was retained to renovate and add to an 1880s townhouse in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan for a young couple and their two children. The extensive renovation covers 4,000 existing interior square feet, while a new addition and roof terrace creates an additional 800 square feet of indoor and outdoor space. The owners wished to retain the charming character of the old building yet desired a more useful and contemporary house that would take advantage of the private backyard.

While the renovation of the old existing structure focused on stripping down old finishes, revealing earlier details and materials, restoring generously proportioned rooms, and updating bathrooms, kitchens, and storage, the new addition focused on the establishment of a strong connection between interior and exterior spaces.
