This is SAS’s fourth home for these clients, who are also friends and artists. The parents first came to us in 2003 to design an apartment and studio in the East Village. Now, 15 years later, we are renovating a home for them and their three school-aged children. This 3-story landmarked Brooklyn brownstone, with a cellar, basement, and attic, was built in 1899 and renovated in 2018. SAS designed the first-floor plan in sync with the family’s movements and flows. The open kitchen and living room are connected to the rear yard by large windows and doors to a terrace with wide patio stairs, allowing for both large parties and intimate family moments. Inspired by Josef Albers’ painting “Homage to the Square” (1971), gradients of paint in warm shades of pink and orange are complemented with a natural material palette of bamboo plywood, ipe wood, stone, and stainless steel.
