Russ & Daughters

SAS was commissioned to renovate the cellar space of The Jewish Museum into Russ & Daughters Restaurant and Appetizing Counter. The project strikes a balance between two historical identities: The Jewish Museum housed within the landmarked Warburg Mansion on the Upper East Side, and Russ & Daughters, a landmark culinary institution on the Lower East Side. The previous cafe interior was stripped away to reveal the building's original vaulted clay tile ceiling, masonry walls and window openings, creating a generous shell for the new restaurant. The materials, form and color were selected to honor both institutions' rich histories.
