Lower East Side Penthouse
New York, New York
2008
3,000 square feet
For a client with a life in the public eye who works and entertains at home when not traveling, we proposed a residence that provided her the utmost in personal privacy and the utmost in the ability to entertain others.
Central to transforming the residence from being generically generous to bespoke was the incorporation of amenities that accommodated personal relaxation- a fireplace next to a freestanding custom tub, a steam room, a private screening room, a quiet place to enjoy breakfast with views of the city, a personal library, and an archive and office. Set in contrast to the introverted private amenities were features able to accommodate exuberant play- an illuminated roof terrace, glowing window sills for cocktail glasses, a movie theater, a concealed wet bar, an eat-around kitchen island, a private dining room overlooking downtown Manhattan, and a billboard with commissioned art visible a few blocks away. The mixture of these widely different features within a single-level residence created the possibility of a modern luxury, accommodating the full spectrum of personal visibility and daily pleasure.
