1,500 square feet

SAS was retained to design a 1,500 square foot gallery space focused on the presentation of artists’ drawings.

Because of the often smaller format of drawings, our plan for the space took a different approach to contemporary art gallery spaces. We opted to create definitive rooms and openings between them rather than the large, warehouse-like spaces that typify many contemporary art spaces. Each room’s atmosphere was developed with very basic architectural tools- floors, walls, ceilings, and lighting. The height of ceilings, floor board orientation, size of door openings, and lighting systems created distinct atmospheres for displaying art works. Movement through the space was simple: centralized openings in the walls of the rooms allowed an enfilade procession reminiscent of classic museums. The space included a reception area, a large gallery, a smaller viewing room, offices, and storage all rendered in simple plaster, oiled maple floors, and un-dyed wool carpet.
