West Village Carriage House
New York, New York
2010
8,000 square feet

SAS converted an existing 1860s carriage house into a sprawling private residence, quadrupling the existing square footage and shifting the interior character of the building from its workaday beginnings to a generous home with amenities appropriate to the client’s lifestyle.

SAS worked carefully within the allowable zoning envelope and the existing front façade to develop an addition that is sympathetic to the character of the existing building and street, adding to its volume with colors and geometries that are neither old nor new. The restored front façade belies an intensely grand interior, made possible by fully gutting the existing space and adding a new cellar level and two new floors above the existing two story structure. A new subterranean pool, library, wine bar, and fitness area add a fresh dimension to the residential program while a new home office, al fresco dining area, master suites, and roof deck with outdoor cooking, dining, and bathing spaces enliven the upper floors. Tinted oak floors, wall paneling, rich stone, white plaster, a dark tile roof, and theatrical lighting lend the house an unexpected atmosphere and intense dramatic presence.
