Park Avenue South Lobby Renovation
New York, New York
2009
500 square feet
SAS was asked to conceive of a new lobby space for a 1920’s office building on Park Avenue South.
The existing 12-story masonry office building has a commanding materiality and weight. We wished to design a lobby that carried a similar quality, suggesting that the atmosphere of the existing building could be extended in a contemporary way. In the compact lobby space, we created a dramatic but restrained entry that emphasized lighting and a deliberate spatial sequence from entry to elevators. A dark but warm tone was established to set the stage for a dramatic entry, made more animated through the use of theatrical lighting and deep shadows.
