Greenwich Village Townhouse
New York, NY
2009
3,600 square feet
Wishing to accommodate a growing family and to display a robust modern art collection, the clients retained SAS to design new residential space in an existing nationally-landmarked Greenwich Village townhouse, a Greek-style Revival building constructed in 1868.
The sturdy formality of the existing building informed the upper, more private floors, which were reconfigured to maximize art display, entertaining, and the growing family’s daily needs. The ground floor, formerly a hair salon, became a more open, informal space accommodating children’s play and guest stays. On this floor, a custom made “room within a room” provides a dedicated space for play and guest beds, while creating a sense of privacy from the existing large storefront windows. New landscaping and an exterior stair to the upper floor reclaims the usefulness of the back yard, which has been connected to the interior by a new large sliding glass door.
